The Big Flood

Sunday 17 May 2015

Hello Room 16 students, friends and whanau,
I hope you are all doing ok and enjoying the dry weather today.  On Friday we emptied out Room 16 and the other classes in our block.  It is now empty except for the mud, water and sludge.  It is going to be along time before we are back in there.

The good news is that we moved all our 'stuff' to the Library and that is our new classroom and we will share it with Room 17.  I was in there today and it is starting to look like a classroom.  I just need one more day to set it up and I will see you in our new class.

I was so proud of how well you behaved and coped with a very scary situation.  I am really excited to show you all our new class when I see you on Tuesday.

Have a great day tomorrow.
Julie

We Remember Them!

Hi.  Welcome back to term 2 of 2015.  I hope everyone had a great holiday.  In week 1, Room 16 spent the week learning about World War 1, in particular the experiences of New Zealand and Australian soldiers who fought at Gallipoli.  I was really impressed by the empathy the students felt for the soldiers and for the families who were at home missing them and worrying about them.

We watched old footage, read stories, made poppies and wrote about what we learnt and how we felt about our new knowledge.  We also made trenches in the classroom and wrote letters home to our mum's about our experiences.  Teacher aide Sarah and I made battle noises around them to make the experience more authentic.

We ended the week with a Anzac assembly where we remembered those who went to war and were changed forever by the experience or who made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned.

Finally, we welcome Phoenix and Joshua to the class.  They have fitted in really well and we are enjoying having them in our whanau.

Take a look at some photos and some of our writing.

To my dearest mother,
I miss you.
Connor

My dearest mother,
I haven't eaten for 18 hours.  I miss you and I want to come back home.

The man is playing the bugle.  I fell sad because it is so slow.  We remember the people who died.

The soldiers are buried in the ground.  The poppies are growing on top of the graves.  Anzac is celebrated for the soldiers who died.
Joshua

If I was a soldier I would be angry because I would be scared of the shooting.  Shooting is loud.
Joshua

My dearest mother, I miss you.  I'm hungry.  I had no sleep.
Phoenix

We celebrate the people who died at war and we go to an Anzac day ceremony so we don't forget them.  The three brothers died at war.

The Last Post music was kind of scary.  But I still loved it.
